The name "Keegan" comes from the counties Tipperary and Roscommon. Variations of the name include "Eagan" and "Egan."

The Keegan Family Crest, described as a "Lion Rampant on a Field of Crimson." In Ireland, the Lion represented the "lion" season, prior to the full arrival of summer. The symbol can also represent a great Warrior or Chief.

The "Field of Crimson" or red color on the shield represents Warrior, Martyr or Military Strength.

"Hope of glory, one who has been enlightened, or sign of the second son" are the meanings associated with the crescent appearing above the Lion's paw. The crown above the Lion's head represents "regal or senior authority" or "heavenly reward."
